The economy, public health, and the environment were negatively impacted as 136 square miles of coastline were shut down. Fishers’ livelihoods were at risk, state parks and campgrounds were closed, people could not enjoy the beach for weeks, and countless wildlife were badly injured and killed. The impacts resulting from this disaster could have, and should have, been avoided. The Council on Environmental Quality within the Executive Office of the President coordinates the federal government’s efforts to improve, preserve, and protect America’s public health and environment.
We take on climate change and other grave threats by identifying what’s most urgent and where we can make the most difference. All new projects in the U.S. and Europe will meet or exceed 90% diversion of construction waste. New projects will minimize water consumption through efficiency measures, water capture and reuse, and maximizing use of non-potable sources. Plastic in our branded products and packaging will contain 30% or higher recycled content or use a lower impact alternative by 2030. All palm oil and palm kernel oil used as an ingredient in Disney-branded products will be from certified sustainable sources.
