Poker Versions from Europe and the United States
Poker (a hand-held game or card) originated in Rome. It is a combination of two Greek games like "punts" as well as "spearfish". Roman games required players to deal their "ces" or "ces, face-down on the table. The players all looked at one to see who was the best, and when the last card was dealt, the player with the highest hand was awarded three cards. This was also referred to as "tournament poker" as the winner had to remain on the table until a player removed the "queen".

Five-card draw poker games are more popular with American poker enthusiasts. They are played in straight format with no pairs or jokers. The dealer usually keeps two low cards and a high card in the table when playing this variant. The player who has the most hands wins the pot (with the exception of the five-card draw where the dealer may occasionally use the five-card deck in addition). The draw of five cards is a game of luck, not the ability of the player.

These games can all be played in casinos around all over the world. The most popular variants in Europe are the French- and Italian-based varieties. There is also Mexican poker that is a variant of Caribbean Stud poker. It is very popular.
