K-pop artists like BTS, Blackpink and SuperM have a long history of charitable giving and support for social issues that mean a lot to them. In March 2020, leader Suho's debut mini album Self-Portrait topped iTunes album charts in 50 countries, notably getting 1st place in Japan, a feat which EXO as a whole has yet to achieve. Exo have won numerous awards both in South Korea and internationally.

However, due to political reasons, EXO currently promotes as 8 members, while Lay does solo activities in China. Despite this, Lay participated in the group's fifth studio album Don't Mess Up My Tempo released in 2018. On May 7, 2019, eldest member Xiumin enlisted for mandatory military service, and member D.O. The group initially debuted with twelve members separated into two subgroups, EXO-K (Suho, Baekhyun, Chanyeol, D.O., Kai, and Sehun) and EXO-M , performing music in Korean and Mandarin respectively. Though all of the members have solo tracks for concerts and release collaborations with other artists, only Lay, Baekhyun, and Chen have released their own solo albums and have active careers as soloists . That same year, Lay auditioned in Changsha, China, and subsequently moved to South Korea, while Xiumin attended an audition with his friend and won second place. In 2010, Luhan was scouted by an SM Entertainment representative in Seoul and passed his audition, while Tao was scouted at a talent show. The last member to join Exo-M was Chen, who took part in the casting system in 2011.
Also in 2016, the group's members spent time advancing their solo careers. On January 7, Baekhyun released "Dream", a collaboration with popular South Korean singer Suzy.
