All About Audio Amplifiers
What is a hi-fi amplifier? In layman's terms, an amplifier increases the sound power of an audio signal passed through it. An amplifier is often found as part of a complete electronic device, or located inside another appliance. This article is going to concentrate on standalone amplifiers only.

An amplifier is classified according to its power rating in Watts (W). The class of a hi-fi amplifier is thus determined by the power it can handle; i.e. the higher the wattage, the better the performance. The best class ab amplifier has to have an output power of about 20 khz.

Amplifiers are made in two different categories - linear / linear voltage/current (LP/LV) generators. Class A hi-fi amplifier runs on AC (alternating current) and is ideal for music systems with direct current (DC) input signals. These amplifiers are usually in car audios due to their ability to handle high volumes. Class B operates on DC and is suitable for normal household usage. However they need to have a sub-class AB version that operates on the Buffered DC mode.

Maximum Power is another aspect of an amplifier's characteristics. It's measured in Watts (W). The maximum power rating of an amplifier refers to its maximum output power when all the operational amplifier elements are functioning optimally. If any component operates at a lower power level than the others, the overall performance of the device would deteriorate. For mcintosh mc462 review , if an amp could only hold a maximum output voltage after all the circuits are operating at full load, the device would likely to have power shortages or trip-outs.

Other important factors to consider in an amplifier are its distortion, immunity to voltage fluctuations and thermal overloads, as well as its power supply voltage. These are known as RMS ratings (stars per unit time). When bowers wilkins 802 diamond is often recommended to measure RMS output power in Ohms instead of volts because Ohms will more accurately reflect the performance of the amplifier at a stand-alone situation. Once these factors are measured, the amp is then tested for equilibrium and accuracy. Many times a thermal overload is applied to a component or circuit to test its efficiency. A thermal head-set test is used to measure the temperature rise inside an amp during operation, this test is also used to measure the RMS rating of the amplifier.

Another important factor is the stability of the amplifier. Stereo amplifiers usually operate at high power levels (sometimes set in part by the manufacturer) so care must be taken to only connect the amplifier to one circuit. Connecting a multi-circuit amplifier into a single-circuit system could result in short-circuits or damage to the amplifier. Once a trial period has been conducted, the amplifier is then soldered onto the board. bower and wilkins 802 are often soldered directly to a printed circuit board (PCB), which can also help to keep the amplifier safe while in storage.

In addition to the power supply, audio sources may require a different kind of amplifier. Multi-Zone Amplifiers (also called Multichannel Amplifiers) can handle high resolution audio input signals. This type of amplifier allows you to connect an audio source A through a component set-up containing two or more zones. The first zone consists of the audio source with its volume controls, and the second zone is dedicated to the audio device - such as an MP3 player or computer. The Multichannel amplifier is often used for home entertainment applications, because of its ability to handle high resolution audio input signal and convert it to a lower resolution analog signal for output to the audio device.

The final part of any Hi-Fi amplifier is its power supply circuit. An amplifier's power supply circuit helps to regulate the amount of power that goes to the amplifier so that it doesn't exceed its maximum or minimum supply. It also controls what power goes out to the components that are powering the audio source. The power supply circuit is usually found on the top or bottom of the device, depending on the manufacturer.
