In fact, all goods are picked during the manufacturing process. However, warehousing and distribution activities usually occur after the completion of the manufacturing process. For example, it may happen that a manufacturer picks raw materials and implements processes to make the finished product. Warehouses then aid in the transportation of the goods to their destination.

Therefore, to effectively handle all aspects of warehousing and distribution, a company must have an effective way of organizing its warehouses, its distribution facilities, and its picking process.
