Gambling Disorder - Depression Anxiety and IPV
Problem gambling can be detrimental to both mental and physical health. Gambling addiction is a significant public health problem in many countries. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM-5) states that an individual has to demonstrate or exhibit at least four of these over the course of twelve months: regular presence of gambling issues with financial investment or other resources. People who continue to gamble without expending additional resources are diagnosed as gamblers. For a diagnosis of gambling disorder, the DSM-5 specifies that a person must show or exhibit at minimum four of the signs identified in the following section:

A. The disorder starts as an uncontrollable urge to play an immediate game. This could be due to emotions of anger, loneliness, frustration, and feeling marginalized by society. B. B. An IPV study found that relationships that had less frequent and inappropriate IPV were not more likely to experience infidelity than those with more frequent IPV.

C. General mental and behavioral disorders also contribute to the onset of gambling-related problems. When gambling addicts use alcohol or drugs or both, they could also suffer from depression or mood disorders. The use of alcohol and drugs can lead to a variety of psychological issues, including sexual dysfunction, marital problems as well as substance abuse and addiction. Alcohol use also has an indirect effect on gambling as it can increase irritability and an impulsivity which are linked to IPV.

D. These causes can trigger existing or developing gambling issues. Communication skills that are poor as well as dysfunctional interpersonal relationships could affect the development of gambling issues. The presence of other risk factors such as alcoholism and substance abuse can exacerbate the psychological and communication issues related to IPV. Both of these conditions can increase the impact of negative outcomes such as poor communication and relationship issues.

E. Emotional and physical impacts can occur when communication is poor or unbalanced. The effects of these issues can increase the risk of gambling-related problems as well as the seriousness of consequences. If gambling addicts lack communication skills and have dysfunctional social relationships, they tend to feel lonely and vulnerable. This feeling of isolation and vulnerability makes them vulnerable to emotional issues and abusive behaviors of family and friends. If these relationships become strained, the relative isolation of the gambler makes it more likely that he'll take up gambling to ease these emotional strains.

F. There is a higher probability that you may experience symptoms of compulsive gambling disorder when you gamble online since the internet facilitates anonymity. Gambling addicts can experience excessive stress and anxiety and weight loss, loss of appetite, or inability to relax. You may also be encouraged by the internet to put down greater stakes than you could afford losing. This increases the risk of financial ruin.

Online gambling can cause emotional trauma to close friends. If your boyfriend or girlfriend is your most trusted friend and you are an avid gambler, it's possible that the intimate partners of a person suffering from compulsive gambling disorder may feel neglected and feel unable to trust you. If this is the case, you could experience depression anxiety when you discuss potential issues you may face with your intimate partner. Gambling online can be risky when you don't have the support from your family.

H. IPV and family violence are an interconnected process. There are strong genetic and environmental factors that influence the likelihood of developing IPV. However, the interactive nature and vulnerability to interpersonal violence caused by gambling as well as IPV make these disorders more vulnerable. Although it is not certain from the research the way in which gambling and IPV interact to increase the likelihood for violence in the workplace however, one study did show that women with gambling disorders had higher rates of IPV compared to those without gambling problems.
