A new restock of the PlayStation 5 has been announced to take place later today at GameStop. Over the course of the past month, GameStop has been holding a large amount of new restocksof the PS5 on a very routine basis. And even though Christmas has now officially passed us by, it looks like GameStop's new sales of Sony's next-gen video game console won't be slowing down. The PS5 is backward compatible with most existing PS4 controllers and accessories for PS4 games only – some with limited functionality. PS5 games can use the existing PlayStation Move, PlayStation Camera, PlayStation VR Aim Controller, officially licensed headsets, and specialty controllers with official licenses like flight sticks and racing wheels.


But with the coronavirus pandemic seeing more people staying at home, some PlayStation fans are clearly desperate to get their hands on a new console to keep them entertained. The PS5 Digital Edition is also currently unavailable, but B&H could offer a surprise restock so it's worth keeping an eye on them. However, it's a retailer we recommend checking should they offer a surprise restock. The bundles offer everything from an extra controller to a $20 GameStop gift card. We're also watching Twitter for news of any PS5 restock this week.

However, it's equally important to note that you may need a plug adaptor and that some Blu-ray discs and DVD may not play. Sony reported total shipments of the PS5 through its fiscal quarter ending December 31, 2020 of 4.5 million units, which were similar numbers to the PS4's launch shipments. Total shipments of PlayStation 5 reached 7.8 million by March 31, 2021, surpassing the 7.6 million units that the PlayStation 4 had shipped in its first two quarters of release. Sony reported that as of July 18, 2021, 10 million PS5 units had been sold through, making the PlayStation 5 their fastest-selling console unit to date.

So if you can wait until later this year, you’re likely to have a lot more PS5 games to choose from and Sony should have more consoles available. It's also a good idea to check a few of the subscription-based wholesaler retailers like Sam's Club, BJ's Wholesale Club, and Costco. You do need a paid membership to shop at these retailers, but that means reduced competition to snag a unit there.

By gambling on a complete redesign of its hardware, controller, and key UI features, PlayStation has unlocked the next-generation of gaming. Conversely, the Digital Edition is sleeker and more symmetrical than its counterpart with its “snatched” waist. This really hammers home to me the raw speed this console has on tap, and it's more than backed up by in-game visuals and special effects. If you want to play online, one of the first things you’ll need is a good headset. Bundles are often available, so if you spot any you like, dive in as they sell out slower than solo consoles.
An example of a game that would fall into this category would include Cyberpunk 2077. As developers begin to shift to PS5, you will see less and less of these sorts of games after the release of the console. PS5 will also support cross-play between PS4 and PS5 players too in addition to allowing PS5 players to use PS4 saves as well. Using custom Head-related Transfer Function maps, this new tech allows gamers to experience high-quality 3D in-game audio with even the most basic headphones or speakers. In a deep dive prior to launch, the PS5’s lead architect Mark Cerny admitted the Tempest Engine is still in the early stages and that it may take years for it to fully develop. The improved loading times and upgraded graphics are great but not really worth the upgrade. Aside from Astro’s Playroom, which is more of a tech demo than a game, there were only three exclusive titles available at launch. If you don’t currently have a console, it might be worth picking up a PS5. However, it faces some stiff competition from the Xbox Series X. Unless you’re looking for PlayStation exclusives , Xbox Game Pass provides incredible value with access to tons of first-party games.

It also doesn't have a competitor for Project xCloud streaming via Game Pass. There's Remote Play, letting you stream your games to PC or mobile devices, but you need to own those games in your library, and Remote Play is not compatible with PS Now games. Until Sony figures out what it wants from PlayStation Now, it'll be stuck in the shadow of Xbox Game Pass. What players have discovered over the last year is that there's a hidden flaw in the DualSense that has been causing joystick drift. Ps5 's not affecting everyone, but it's become a big enough problem that a class-action lawsuit was filed against the company.

It's a huge step forward for haptics in Sony's hardware, and we found that the haptic feedback itself is a vastly superior replacement for the traditional rumble of old. When a character runs across a certain surface, like metal, it manages to somehow replicate that feeling in the palms of your hands – it's a truly wonderful sensation. When this is held down, it can mute your television speakers or headset, which we found to be a useful quality-of-life feature. When speaking into the mic, we found it worked best when we kept the controller in our usual playing position, instead of holding it towards our mouth.

For the moment, the service that seems most useful to most people is Walmart Plus. There are more restocks at Walmart than most other places right now, and that subscription can increase your odds of getting a console dramatically. You're still going to have to be quick and accept that you may not get the console on the first try. Resellers are using software to purchase a massive number of PS5s at once, leaving only a few for actual humans to buy.

More technical reviews, such as those by Digital Foundry, noted that features such as variable refresh rate and the advertised 8K video output mode were not present at launch. They criticized the console's inability to output a native 1440p video signal but lauded the ray-tracing, SSD speed, and 120 Hz output capabilities.


Of course, game consoles can do more than just provide your thumbs with something to do - modern consoles are also full-on streaming video players. Returnal has shown that 3D audio can be a powerful tool when it comes to increasing immersion and that it can also be beneficial in fast-paced games where audio cues are just as important as what you see on screen. It’s the best implementation of the technology yet, and we hope Sony continues to support it. What you can expect from this new generation of gaming, then, is faster load times, better framerates in Performance Mode, and higher target resolutions everywhere else. Even though not every PS5 launch game will have it, most should feature the aforementioned Performance Mode, which prioritizes higher frame rates over resolution and extra graphical features. With many games, this sacrifices various graphically-intensive effects like ray tracing or higher shadow quality, and drops the base resolution, in order to achieve higher frame rates like 60fps instead of 30fps.

The game installed off disc incredibly quickly and was ready to play within minutes. And, trust me, that's no exaggeration, as I talk about a little further down in this review. You only had to follow the story of PS5 pre-orders to know just how in-demand the PlayStation 5 console was in the run-up to launch.

At this moment, it doesn't look like a Walmart Plus subscription is required. Hotstock.iomay not yet be a household name, but the site is gaining fans for its real-time product-tracking capabilities. While it's not specifically geared to PS5s, Hotstock.io lists the console as one of its most popular items.

Well, the PlayStation 5 can play almost any PS4 game (99% of them to be exact), and select PS3/PS2 titles via PlayStation Now… but that's it. This operates in much the same way as the quick menu did, and lets you view various sub-menus such as your Friends list, downloads in progress, notifications and, if you have your account linked, Spotify. Either option works well, but the Charging Station does certainly look nicer sitting on the shelf, and more cost-effective third-party charging stations will likely become available in the coming months.


Some retailers, like Walmart, GameStop and Best Buy, are now offering exclusive early access to console restocks to members of the companies’ subscription-based membership programs. Some PlayStation loyalists don't care what the console looks like, but others will fuss if the design doesn't align with their tastes. Many have voiced an aversion to the disc-equipped console's bulging optical drive. As a result, they'll be opting for the Digital Edition for its sleeker, symmetrical design. On Sept. 16, the gaming giant finally revealed the prices of both consoles during its PS5 Showcase livestream event.
