Shiatsu is a pseudoscience that originates from ancient Japanese bodywork, is based on the theories of the traditional Chinese medical practices. Swedish massage is the most common type of shiatsu massage used in the United States, and also the most popular type of shiatsu massage in the west. In this form of therapy, the therapist will use their hands to massage the various meridian areas, applying constant pressure on them. This Swedish type of therapy is most commonly used as a relaxation and pain relief method.
Hilot is a second form of shiatsu massage that employs fluid, gentle movements to loosen tight muscles. Similar to Swedish massage Therapists also apply constant pressure using their hands to loosen up tight muscles all over the body. Hilot is often referred to as Japanese Water Massage, due to the similar techniques employed. It is typical to mix both Swedish and Hilot techniques in this type of shiatsu therapy for greater healing.
Another type of Japanese Shiatsu massage is stone massage, which makes use of the benefits of heat and stones. A stone massage lasts at least 90 minutes and is characterized by intensive tissue work to the muscles. The stones are heated to an optimum temperature prior to being used, and they can be as basic as granite or marble to highly purified crystals. These heated stones can be used to relieve tension in muscles, and to reduce strain and congestion via heat and friction.
