Sulfates are a form of salt and a chemical acid that should not go in your hair. My first argument is that there are too many defects. Some people may argue that hair products containing sulfate does what consumers want it to do: remove oil and dirt from your hair. However, yes you may be getting oil and dirt out your hair, but you’re also stripping natural oils out of your hair at the same time. Founder of a dermatology group, Deena Campbell states that “(sulfates) can also strip natural oils from the scalp. That can make hair dry and brittle. And if your scalp is sensitive, sulfates can cause irritation like redness, dryness, and itching”. And that is just a few of the many disadvantages of sulfates. A customer's main expectations out of hair products is to get and maintain healthy growing hair. Losing moisture and protein in your hair doesn’t sound healthy at all. A scientist who studies human hair, Rita Wagner, conducted a study finding that hair loses 7 times more protein in sulfate than in water. Also, there are natural ingredients that remove oil and dirt that are in sulfate-free products like peppermint and tea-tree oil.

When it comes to the hair business, creating a product that works for everyone is how you make money. My next argument is that selling hair products that contain sulfate is not a smart move in the hair business, and the fact that you can’t use the hair product unless you have certain hair type is one of the reasons why. Some people may argue that you still make money targeting specific customers with only certain hair types. However, the goal is to always make more money. A seller would be limiting their ability to make more by giving themselves such a small range of customers to work with. Also, customers awareness on the defects of sulfates have been rising, so revenue for hair products containing sulfate would decrease. Some hair product sellers look for the fastest and cheapest way to get their products selling to the public by using cheap ingredients, and today it’s really catching up to them.
