How to Make a Home Accessible to Users of Power Wheel Chairs
People with disabilities can still lead full, satisfying, and independent lives. However, those who plan to remain in their own homes following a disabling injury or illness may have some work ahead of them. Older homes don't always have the necessary features to support mobility equipment and provide a safe environment for wheelchair-bound residents, but all it takes to resolve the problem is usually a few modifications.

When making modifications to the home's exterior, focus on the walkway, driveway, and entryway. It should be possible to navigate power wheel chairs from a van to the front door without encountering curbs, cracked pavement, or other obstacles that could place its user at risk of a fall. At least one exterior entrance also needs to have a flat threshold or a ramp with railings that meets ADA standards.

Doorways and hallways must be well-lit, easy to navigate, and large enough to accommodate Buy Motorized Wheelchairs or indoor scooters. There should be no rugs or runners in these areas, especially on the stairs. People who have trouble moving their hands or wrists will also need doors that have handles instead of knobs or, better yet, power doors that can be operated both remotely and manually.

Toilets should be high enough to make it easy to and from a wheelchair or mobility chair and should have arms or guardrails for added support. Bathing areas often need some modifications, as well. Shower stalls with roll-in accessibility are always preferable to traditional bathtubs, and there should be grab bars in the stall.

If there's no way to replace the bathtub, consider adding a shower seat to make transfers in and out of the tub easier. Finally, consider replacing free-standing sinks with countertop sinks that offer greater access and support.
