Are you planning to take long-distance trip away from home? When WiFi isn't working, make sure you have enough digital material.
Let me tell you about an excursion I made last year aboard a cruise ship through the Arctic. It sounded fantastic, National Geographic trip thru the ice and back, with polar bears and many other animals. There was going to be ice everywhere, snow everywhere. Man-made machines were going to take on the elements and move through the frozen wasteland of northern Norway. It sounded incredible, like an epic fight with the weather and north.

It was suggested that I carry all of the technology that I would be able to carry in my bag. I did carry my laptop and also added a large display to expand the space. According to the experts, the electricity was not a problem. I wasn't sure what was in store for me. Just two days into the 14-day trip I did not know of the fact that my Internet connection would not work and I would be gone for the following 10 days. I was completely stunned when this occurred. No trip, however hard or remote, shouldn't result in an unexpected disconnect from the technology world, not in 21st century. Not only do I have unfinished work to handle during the next week, but I also didn't prepare myself for the time of downtime.
It doesn't matter if you are forced to go offline. Internet is available no matter where you are. If your internet connection is not working at home or is not working, just go to an McDonalds nearby and make use of their complimentary WiFi to get what you need. Bring your laptop to the nearest Starbucks and make use of the free WiFi connection to surf the Internet whenever you want. However, no restaurant or cafe can help out there, up north, hours away from the nearest shack that has electricity generated by a weak generator.. There's not a free Internet. There are only two choices in these circumstances either to get a satellite connection or turn off the internet.

I can't afford a satellite phone. It's expensive particularly for Internet access. However, I'm going to create a massive audio and video collection for next time before I travel across the globe without Internet access. Last time I had only two songs. The songs were downloaded back earlier in the day, so all I could listen to was 3 jazz songs and a song I didn’t know what it was called. That's all. 4 tunes for 2 weeks of no-things.. If I had known that this would be the case I would have planned. I would have loaded my computer with TV shows movies, as well as a lot of music videos. My favourite podcasts were ones that I would listen to for hours. It's simple to download them, convert them into mp3 then save on my computer. Then, I can lay in bed and listen to the podcasts that I enjoy at home. This could have been my golden hour or two weeks of gold, but it ended up being 2 weeks of gazing at the ceiling and running out to meet passengers every whenever a sound makes its way through the corridors..

The trip was empty, both literally and metaphorically.. I have never been so bored. I knew the problem will eventually be due to the thick ice, so the boat needed to change course and be returned to civilization. Although this wasn't a surprise however, there were plenty of other alternatives. Many hours of downtime could be spent watching podcasts, DIY videos on fixing things at home, or simply listening music. The next time, I'll convert Youtube videos from mp4 format to MP3 format using my laptop. Bring them along and you can listen to your favourite songs from your laptop. Music will never make you feel depressed. Hulu, Netflix and other apps can help you download your favorite shows and movies to watch offline. It is also possible to take them when you go on long trips to the arctic. Make sure you don't be bored. Have fun!
