Warehouse Management Systems Help Pick And Pack
Order processing is an essential component of good order fulfillment and is the system or work flow related to the packing, picking and delivery of items to a distribution center. Order processing operations are commonly known as "distribution centres" or "DRC's". The term distribution centre refers to the point where goods are collected, stored, sorted and delivered. The DRC has many different functions including receiving, storing and transporting goods.

Pick and pack is a very complex operation. The entire process consists of at least three phases including planning, wave picking and placing orders. Most fulfillment centres have a series of pick and pack zones. Different types of zones exist based on how the distribution centre will use them. In most cases, the pick and pack zone works with the concept of waves. A pick and pack system consists of zones which are each assigned to certain types of goods or types of customers.

The basic function of the pick and pack process is to collect and sort merchandise in transit. Goods are usually loaded into trucks, vans and storage units which are then transported or loaded onto narrow shelf-shaped racks called transport racks. Freight handling services are provided by the fulfillment centers.

Fulfillment centres usually sell to clients on the basis of pre-sale orders. When an order is placed by a customer for an item, the fulfillment company begins its work by collecting information from the customer. The information necessary for this collection includes the customer's billing information, address, credit card information and mailing address. Information needed to pre-pay the appropriate tax authorities for taxes on the purchased item is also obtained. All of these functions are completed in accordance with applicable federal, provincial and local laws.

The picking process also begins at the pick and pack point. Drivers or pallet drivers use handheld devices called handheld scanners to locate the goods that have been ordered and to determine their sizes and quantities. Once the scan is complete, the driver places the goods in required bins. The pallet or sorter, a flat piece of equipment which holds the merchandise securely, is then slid into a slot located on the conveyor belt. The conveyor belt is operated by a computer system in conjunction with software that receives information about the loads, including location and weight of each load, and sends commands to the belt drive.

An important part of the pick and pack process is warehouse operations. This is where warehouse management software comes into play. Warehouse management software, also known as logistics software, is designed to support warehouse operations by improving supply chain management, tracking inventory and analyzing costs. It also includes systems for billing, pay for goods ordered and quality assurance of products.

Pick and pack processes vary greatly depending on the nature of the goods to be picked or packed. For instance, some companies simply pick and pack perishable items. Other companies may need to pack delicate and semisolidated goods such as medical supplies. In large medical warehouses, this is common practice. A medical logistics manager will require accurate and timely information regarding the perishable items in the warehouse so that the proper actions are taken should a shipment become lost or damaged, a mistake occurs or a shipment is canceled before it has been paid for.

Packaging plays an important role in keeping inventories current and in good condition. Many businesses are able to save money by using lower-cost alternatives to traditional packing methods. They can do so by using more economical packaging supplies, for example, bulk internal-packaging solutions, or by using a variety of supplies for different applications. A warehouse management system also can help streamline the packing process. Streamlining the packing process reduces the time it takes to get products from shipping to the warehouse.
