I would like to be able to share a tale which happened to me during a holiday I spent aboard a boat through the Arctic. It sounded amazing National Geographic's expedition through the Arctic ice , complete with Polar bears. There was going to be ice everywhere, snow everywhere. Man-made machines were created to fight the elements and to navigate the frozen wilderness of northern Norway. It was a grand undertaking, an epic combat with the north and the weather, as well as the pole.


It was suggested that I carry all the tech I would be able to carry in my suitcase. I did manage to pack my laptop, as well as a big screen to expand my workspace. It was all electric, as they told me. It was going to be a tough task, but I didn't know what I could expect. I was unaware that two days into my 14-day trip , I'd lose my Internet connection and disappear from the planet Earth for the next 10 days. Nowadays, nobody cares that they're forced to go offline. Internet is accessible all over the world. If your home's internet connection isn't working it is possible to go to a nearby McDonald's and get the free WiFi connection you need. You can even bring laptop and sit down in the cafe at Starbucks for the duration of time and sit at a table and surf the Internet to your heart's desire. The only restaurant or cafe that can aid you from north. There are hours away from the nearest generator that generates electricity. There isn't the internet for free everywhere. There are two ways to escape in such situations. You could be offline or bring the internet via satellite.

I cannot afford to buy an satphone because it's too pricey, especially for Internet. However, I'm going to build a huge audio and video library for the upcoming time before I travel into the unknown without Internet access. The last time I was online I had two songs. Both of them were downloaded earlier in the day. I was unable to enjoy three easy jazz tracks or one famous song. That's it. 4 songs for 2 Weeks of Insanity. If I had known that this was the case I would have planned. I would have loaded my laptop up with movies, TV shows, music videos, and audio files with music and podcasts. I could have spent hours listening to my favorite podcasts. It's easy to download podcasts, convert them into mp3 and save them to my computer. It is then easy to sit in my bedroom and listen to whatever it is I like to listen to at home, but don't have the time for. This could have been my golden hour, or two weeks of gold, but turned out to be two weeks of gazing at the ceiling and running to meet passengers every when a sound is heard in the corridors..

The trip was empty literally and metaphorically. I have never been so bored. Ice was too thick, which I knew was a possibility and the boat was forced to turn around to pull back to civilization. That wasn't unexpected however, again, hours and hours of downtime could have been used to watching podcasts, listening to videos on fixing things at home, and simply listening to music. The next time, I'll convert YouTube videos to MP4 and MP3 on my personal computer. Music can help lift your spirits, so don't be discouraged. Remember that Hulu as well as Netflix apps can download shows and movies to stream offline. They can also be viewed on the long journey across the arctic. Be sure to not be bored. Good luck!
