How to Make a Loft Bed

Once you've selected the plan you like the most, you'll need to prepare for the construction.
Room Layout

The average loft plan is for a twin-size mattress with a floor space requirement of 4' x 6.5'. You'll want to measure your room and sketch the dimensions onto a sheet of paper. The typical formula is one inch equals one foot.

Next on a separate sheet of paper, measure out the space you'll need for the loft bed (4' x 6.5'). Cut this out and place onto the other drawing of your room dimensions. Experiment with various placements to find the best one for your room.
List of Supplies Needed

Most plans come with this kind of supply list. If you've decided to tackle this project without a plan, then you can purchase the following pre-cut lumber and assemble your bed without needing to saw. Below is a list of supplies you'll need.Typical Supplies for Twin Size Loft Bed:

One sheet: 3/4" thick plywood (Base for mattress)
One: 4 x 8 x 8' posts
Four: 1 x 3.5 x 8' finish boards (Base of mattress finish)
Four: 2 x 6 x 8' posts (Mattress/loft bed frame)
Six: 2 x 2 x 8' posts (Side rails)
Four: 4 x 4 x 8' posts (Corner supports)
Supply of bolts and screws (Do not use nails)

Start with Loft Section

The loft is created by using the 2' x 6' lumber to create a box around the plywood (cut slightly larger than the mattress size. A good rule of thumb is to allow one inch more than the actual mattress size. Later, you'll want to add Velcro to the plywood and the bottom of the mattress to make sure there can be no slipping of the mattress once it's in place.
Ceiling Clearance and Loft Height

Most college dorms require a minimum of 30" for headroom between the mattress and ceiling. If you wish to be more generous you can allow a few more inches without sacrificing the open space underneath the loft. You'll need to saw the 4 x 4 lumber posts to be equal lengths.
Support Posts

Next, you'll attach the 4 x 4 posts to the bottom of the platform you've already constructed. You'll want additional support with horizontal posts or cross posts in each inside corner. Make sure the design looks natural by adding shelves on the outside of the horizontal support board.
Add Finish boards

The finish boards will go around the bed loft to give a finished look and add style.
Safety Rails

Most colleges require loft beds to have safety rails. You can use the 2 x 2 x 8' posts to create two rows of railings with a center vertical piece for additional support. You'll want to add support rails around the entire bed since most colleges require loft beds be completely self-supporting.
Make and Attach a Ladder

For ease of access, you'll need to build a ladder and attach it permanently to either the end or side of the bed. You can use one inch thick lumber for the ladder. Space the treads 10" apart. Make sure the ladder is secured to the top and bottom of the loft without any angling from the bed. (Most college regulations don't allow for freestanding, partially attached or angled ladders.)
Loft Beds Plans or Kits

You may prefer to purchase a loft bed kit with the lumber already cut and marked for easy assembly instead of opting for a set of plans. Whichever one you select for your loft bed, you're certain to have many choices.
