Andrew Johnson took place after Abraham Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln's two main goals were to end hard feelings brought on by the war, and to assist former slaves in their new lives.
Lincoln wanted to pardon all ex-confederate soldiers who swore to support the constitution and the nation. Many people in congress felt that his plan would only restore power to
the plantation owners. At this time of the assassination, Lincoln and Congress simply could not agree about the issue. Andrew Johnson's plan was harsher than Lincoln's. It allowed
for the pardon of very few soldiers and officials and ordered the confiscation of the largest plantations.
It was supposed to overthrow the established order and allow small farmers and tradespeople to take political control in the southern states. Johnson's plan did not accomplish nearly enough to satisfy the sad government back in the day (Congressional radicals). I mean seriously! Give him a break! He was only vice president for JUST 41 days! Anyway... Many ex-confederates won office despite the prohibitions. Southern states passed things call BLACK CODES restricting freedom and rights for African Americans. (Essentially couldn't do the fancy stuff whites could do back in the day). Many Republicans felt that the gains made after the war were being lost. The Freedmen’s Bureau was established in March 1865. In addition to assisting African Americans in need, the Freedmen’s Bureau built hospitals and schools. The bureau also helped many former slaves register to vote! It wasn't disbanded until 1872.
SIDENOTE: to be disbanded is to be broken up or closed down.
EXAMPLES: The old playground was thought to be haunted and I figured out it was disbanded in 1978. The roller coaster got disbanded because it was very dangerous.
The Radical Republicans, encouraged by gains in the 1866 election, pushed through the Reconstruction Act. (Why they were called the 'Radical Republicans' I do not know -_-)
