The Real Topic On International Business And Chinese Companies
As a US based Small to medium size business entrepreneur for the last two years, I've had the privilege of serving on the management team of two US Small to medium sized businesses, and one of them was a Chinese owned enterprise. This company hired four US based professionals to manage the international part of their business. This was quite an investment, given that they were only paying us $15k per month. Nevertheless, it allowed us to gain a deep insight into the Chinese business culture, and we learned quite a few things. Here are fulfillment from that six month experience.

First, there is an ongoing myth that Chinese people do not work as hard as Americans. This myth may have been true in the past, but not anymore. The reality is that they work harder than any other population group. In fact, the Chinese are harder on themselves than any other group in the world. It's important to keep this in mind when thinking about starting or growing a small to medium sized business in China. We know that US based corporations do business in China, and doing business in China means outsourcing, which works very nicely for the Chinese.

Second, fulfillment learned in the classroom that the international relationships are a huge factor in the US economic performance and growth. This is absolutely true. Therefore, it's critical for us as entrepreneurs to learn how to build good relationships with our Chinese counterparts. And it's also critical for us to understand that international trade and marketing are absolutely integral to our long term success. If we get this right, and if we develop a strong entrepreneurial mindset, then we will find that it's much easier to grow a small to medium sized business in China compared to the US. This principle applies no matter which country you are currently doing business.

Third, entrepreneurs should understand that innovation is a key component of doing business in China. Innovation is the key to new products that solve customer problems, or to new innovative ideas that can be quickly tested in the market. As an entrepreneur you already know that this is true. So it's critical for you to know where to find ideas. You may know that one entrepreneur in your town has discovered a new way to make a product, but if you visit their office, you may see that they've just created the next big idea. This kind of discovery could mean the difference between being right and being left in this market.

Fourth, we are seeing more foreign companies investing in China. As a result, the Chinese government has developed some policies that favor foreigners doing business in China. Unfortunately, there is still a great deal of mistrust toward foreign people and companies in China. But that's changing. We're seeing more foreign based companies doing business in China and more people enjoying the benefits of doing business in China.

Fifth, we have to be willing to invest in new technologies. We often lead in technology. In China, it seems that most of the technology advances come from our military. The Chinese are trying to catch up and develop the capability to strike the United States with laser guided weapons. That makes sense to me.

Sixth, US based 3PL companies must be willing to train their employees in Chinese techniques and strategies. The Chinese love to teach and they certainly have the resources to do so. If we don't invest in training our people in Chinese skills, the Chinese will take over and the US economy will suffer.

Seventh, third world nations have a lot to learn about doing business in the United States. The Chinese believe that the rules of the USA do not apply to them. They would like to set their own rules and we need to be prepared to explain that we do indeed want those things. We need to be prepared to adjust the rules to suit the Chinese. So the next time that you're doing business with Chinese or third world countries, please consider all this and think on it.
