Tempera, also known as egg tempera, is a permanent, fast-drying painting medium consisting of colored pigment mixed with a water-soluble binder medium . Tempera paintings are very long-lasting, and examples from the first centuries CE still exist. Egg tempera was a primary method of painting until after 1500 when it was superseded by the invention of oil painting. A paint commonly called tempera consisting of pigment and glue size is commonly used and referred to by some manufacturers in America as poster paint. Gouache is a water-based paint consisting of pigment and other materials designed to be used in an opaque painting method. Gouache differs from watercolor in that the particles are larger, the ratio of pigment to water is much higher, and an additional, inert, white pigment such as chalk is also present.

‘Post-Impressionism’ is a term coined in 1910 by English art critic and painter Roger Fry to describe the reaction against the naturalistic depiction of light and colour in Impressionism. Artists like Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, and Vincent van Gogh developed a personal style although unified by their interest in expressing their emotional and psychological responses to the world through bold colours and often symbolic images. Op Art paintings and works employ tricks of visual perception like manipulating rules of perspective to give the illusion of three-dimensional space.
The working of the paint allows for many different effects to be created, from the softness of the flower petals to the reflection on the vase and the many visual textures in between. Some of the qualities of oil paint include a wide range of pigment choices, its ability to be thinned down and applied in almost transparent glazes as well as used straight from the tube , built up in thick layers called impasto . One drawback to the use of impasto is that over time the body of the paint can split, leaving networks of cracks along the thickest parts of the painting. Because oil paint dries slower than other media, it can be blended on the support surface with meticulous detail.
