FOR THE SEEDFOWL





















JANUARY
They always sat in the courtyard. Cleo always arrived first to the lunch table as her classroom was the closest to the commons. Hawen and Levi would come a few minutes later, both from the athletics wing, Hawen for soccer and Levi for P.E. The hall happened to be the furthest from the commons so Cleo had a few moments to herself.
She pulled out her social studies homework she had gotten last period, wanting to get it done and out of the way.
“Seedfowl doing’ her work seconds after she got it ‘cause she knows it’ll take her a while. Bird brain.” A girl from a nearby table commented.
Cleo looked up to see Kayla Reef looking at her. The wormfowl girl had long brown hair and mean, cold brown eyes. She gave Cleo a smirk before looking back down.
Cleo did the same, used to comments like what Kayla had said. Seefowl were like punching bags to the wormfowl and waterfowl. They were lower than them in rank, so who were they to protest?
Hawen and Levi sat down across from Cleo. “Oh, is that the social studies packet we got?” Hawen asked, pointing to Cleo’s paper.
“Yeah, I figured I’d get some of it done now.” She shrugged.
“Can I see? I haven’t gotten mine yet.” Levi asked, reaching out for the paper.
Cleo slid it to him, “It’s not too bad, just fill in the blanks.”
“Good, ‘cause I probably wouldn’t do so well if it were open questions.”
“We can work on it in the park today.” Hawen said, unwrapping his sandwich.
He took a large bite.
