-Chapter 8.
Creating a Republican Culture
1790-1820
This is more about culture, not the political party and republicanism
--More about a republic as protecting the civilians, gov. makes decisions for you
II. Democratic Republican culture
-2 subjects, slavery and being a republican person
-start seeing equality, not for african american and women, but for men.
--It's significant because even though it just starts with white men, it spreads to woman and people of colors as well.
--The reaon why it starts to rise is because a middle class starts to rise
---There used to be only rich and poor
---There are now more culture and political equality for middle class
---You could start penny-less and go up the ladder and become successful
---There was a belief of no aristrocracy
----There was social classes though
--There was an idea of people working to go up
---it was frowned to have hereditary wealth
---idea of the self made man was important
--Discrimination between men and women and people of color was normal and custom in european society
---it was mostly because europe was vastly influencial during this time
---it leads up to the next 100 years for minorities and woman to become more equal
-Marriage system
--Women wanted rights
---not in large numbers
---there was discussion that men and american citizen was natural rights
---natural rights mostly implied for men and not women and minorities
--Arranged marriages are decreasing
--There is more focus on sentimentalism and companionage

---It's not about what's best for the town, it's about who you love and who you want to be with
--Marriages were more about social statuses in the time
--Arranged marriages used to be more convenient
--New type of love marriages
---idea of republicanism would spread to the whole family
---male authority is feeling that female are getting too much equality and opportunity
----Because of this, patriarchal authoritarianism gives rise
---birth rate goes lower even though the population is still increasing
----the reason why it's all still increasing is because immigrants from other countries are coming into the country
---religion focuses more on the focus on the men rather than the focus on women creating babies
----if something that happens then it's the men's fault
----men must take more responsibility for action
---Dr Benjamin Rush
----says that daughters and sons should become better republican families
----daughters are to become republican wives and help and serve the men
----he advocated for women and male education and also wanted public education was wanted
----woman were supposed to have power reside on how successful people are
---2 types of parenting
----permissive and independant for middle and higher
----authoritarian and patriarchal was for poor or tenant families
--There are debates for public education
---Elite get opportunity to go to primary, secondary, and college
---common americans only got to primary
---after 1820s public educations become important
----public education also starts to teach teachers
----many places start to teach teachers mostly in college and other places like that
----by 1910 almost everyone starts to go to highschool
----common book was "Life of George Washington"
III Aristrocratic Republicanism and Slavery
1/3 of population of southern states were slaves
there was belief that slavery would end (mostly in the north)
it actually grows after the next century
slavery was written into the constitution and was part of prosperity
-slavery was seen as a neccessary evil
slavery ending was a dream for some but it never happened
virginia had a manumssion law and 10k free
virginia eventually repeal slaves manumission
-if you free slaves, many questions mostly immoral come to light
-in 1804 northern states have manumission laws and abolishing slavery happens
-even though this happens, discrimination goes away
Abolitionist claimed that they were slaves because they couldnt become any better
Slave owners said it's because theyre like that. slaves are inferior and stupid and just a little better than animals
-many didn't believe this, many believed in journals that it was a necessary evil, they needed it
It was mostly about money
-they generated more goods than anything else
