Ingri Mortenson was born in Kongsberg, Norway to an artistic family. Her uncle was a clergyman and a poet who translated the Icelandic Eddas into Norwegian.
Ingri and Edgar met in Munich when Ingri was an art student. They married in 1925.
In 1929 they bought an insurance settlement and moved to Brooklyn.
At first, they pursued different careers. Edgar illustrated books while Ingri garnered commissions to paint portraits.
