How could America’s confident stand against communism create such a vocal opposition and divide the country so dramatically? Write down some events you think might lead to such a thing happening
First, as the war went on, LBJ sent more and more troops and the war never seemed to end. Senator Fulbright and activists believed american soldiers were dying for no reason as the the war had little to do with american interest. Also, most troops sent to Vietnam weren't volunteers but draftees and at that the government drafted more than 1.5 million men went into service. What didn't help was that over 20% of the military deaths in combat were African american troops. Critics said the selective service system said it wasn't fair as most of the 2.5 million mean who served in Vietnam were from working-class and poor backgrounds. American college campuses became the centers of antiwar sentiment, most important of them all were the university of Michigan and university of California at Berkeley.
