amp [amp] – (noun) a measure of the amount of electric current or the amount of electricity used

volt [vohlt] – (noun) a measure of the force or pressure of an electric current

watt [wot] – (noun) a measure of how much work electricity can do per second

Volts

Volts are a measure of the force or pressure of an electric current.

Different batteries have different voltages. The higher the voltage on a battery, the more powerful it is. You might notice that a remote control for the television takes two small

batteries. It does not require many volts, or force, to use a small remote control. You might have a toy that takes several large batteries. The toy requires more voltage, or force, to use.

Imagine you have a garden hose. The water could come out with a strong force or a small force. The force of water flowing out of a garden hose is similar to volts.

Volts are named after an Italian scientist named Alessandro Volta. He made the first modern battery.

Amps

Amps are a measure of the amount of electric current or the amount of electricity used. Imagine again that there is a garden hose. Amps is similar to the amount of water that flows out of the hose.

These two batteries have the same voltage: 1.5 volts. However, the larger battery has more amps, or current, making it more powerful.

André-Marie Ampère

Amps are named after André-Marie Ampère. He had many ideas about electricity and magnetism and how they are related. He used math and experiments to show how electricity and magnetism often interact with each other.

Watts

Watts are a measure of how much work electricity can do per second. A 60-watt light bulb can produce 60 watts of energy per second. A 75-watt light bulb can do more work. A 75-watt light bulb is brighter than a 60-watt light bulb. However, because it uses more electricity to do its work, a 75-watt light bulb will cost more money to use than a 60-watt light bulb.

The watt was named after the Scottish inventor of the steam engine, James Watt.
