Kültür kelimesinin çeşitli mânaları vardır. Aslında Lâtince'de
"toprağıişleme"
demek olan bu tâbir, sonraları Batı Avrupa dillerinde kazandığı
"yüksek umûmî bilgi"
mânası ile Türkçe'ye de girmiştir. Kültür sözü biraz da-ha hususîleştirilerek şu tâbirlerde de kullanılmaktadır:
İbtidaî kültür, ilerikültür, beşerî kültür, teknik kültür, yerleşik kültür, aşiret kültürü, kültür kavim-leri-tabiat kavimleri
vb... Fakat bu deyimlerde de "kültür"ün mânası, gereğikadar açık değildir. Başta sosyologlar ve sosyal psikologlar olmak üzere,umumiyetle kültür tarihçilerince "kültür" kelimesinin ilmî yönden ifade etti-ği kavram aşağıdaki şekillerde belirlenmeğe çalışılmıştır:"Bilgiyi, imanı, san'atı, ahlâkı, hukuku, örf-âdeti ve insanın cemiyetin bir üyesi olması dolayısiyle kazandığı diğer bütün maharet ve itiyatları ihtivaeden mürekkep bir bütün." (E. B. Taylor)"Bir topluluğun yaşama tarzı." (C. Wiesler)"Atalardan gelen maddî-manevî değerler yekûnu." (E. Sapır)"İnsanın tabiatı ve kendini idare etme yolu ile bizzat meydana getirdiğieser." (A. Young)"Bir toplulukta örf ve âdetlerden, davranış tarzlarından, teşkilât ve te-sislerden kurulu ahenkli bütün." (R. Thurnwald)."Umûmi olarak inançlar, değer hükümleri, örf ve âdetler, zevkler, kısa-ca insan tarafından yapılmış ve yaratılmış herşey." (A. K.
