Notes

The call was out of nowhere. I was having a meeting with some clients when my secretary knocked on my door and with her facial expression, I knew something was wrong. I wrapped up as soon as I could and called her in. It was my mother, she had called. What could be wrong? I called her line back several times but it kept going straight to voicemail. The only message I got from the secretary was that she wanted me to come home right away so I got in the car and zoomed off to my apartment. 



The damn traffic. Typical. I hated the suspense but I tried to stay calm and not overspeed. I didn’t want to get the 10th ticket before mid-year so I kept my cool. I got home to a noisy welcome. There was an ambulance. What was the ambulance doing in front of my building? Was it there for someone in my apartment or one of the other apartments in my building? With my racing heart, I sped up the stairs and it was there for Deolu. It was there for Deolu. 



I got to the entrance of my apartment and I saw them try to wrap and pick up Deolu on a stretcher. I ran to them, tears in my eyes. “Don't you dare”, I screamed. My mother rushed to me to calm me down but they were taking Deolu, my Deolu. 



One of the attendants calmly said, “I’m sorry sir, he’s dead”. 



Dead? What does that mean? Why would he die? He kissed me goodbye this morning. I had texted him two hours earlier and he made plans for dinner tonight? We had just gotten married less than a year ago? We had started talking about having our first child, what do you mean he’s dead? Dead what? The shock of this caused my heart to beat really hard and I felt breathe leave my lungs, I fell and fainted.



It was a beautiful garden we were in. There were butterflies, cool breeze and ice cream. He had always loved ice cream so I wasn't surprised that he'd have a truck come around. I smiled at him as we held hands to get ice cream. He kept smiling at me, He looked really handsome.
