When we look at the Tinker, Hazelwood, Bethel, and Morse cases, a major question arises, to what extent are schools allowed to deem topics unacceptable to be discussed in school? The justification given for the school district to silence Diego Jacobs was the idea that discussing guns was controversial and from the Hazelwood, Bethel, and Morse case, it has been ruled that schools have the right to silence inappropriate topics, topics that will hinder the learning of students. So, it begs to question that just because guns are controversial, does that mean that they are inappropriate to discuss. If schools ban all controversial topics, how are students to be prepared for real democracy where these kinds of topics are discussed constantly and voiced daily but are banned in schools? If Diego wasn't advocating guns, then is that still considered inappropriate?
