What is Covid-19 and why is it a threat?
The Covid-19 is a new infectious respiratory disease that emerged in Wuhan,China in December 2019.
According to WHO, the outbreak has affected over 12 million people and killed more than 500 thousand in more than 200 countries throughout the world.
Till now there is no report of any clinically approved antiviral drugs or vaccines that are effective against COVID-19.
It has rapidly spread around the world, posing enormous health, economic, environmental and social challenges to the entire human population.
It has also severely disrupted the global economy.
Almost all the nations are struggling to slow down the transmission of the disease by testing & treating patients, quarantining suspected persons through contact tracing, restricting large gatherings, maintaining complete or partial lock down etc.
Without confirmation of any imminent vaccine, it is unlikely that many good changes will occur anytime soon. Therefore, it is essential for people to adjust to the unprecedented circumstances they have faced and do their part to fight this pandemic by practising appropriate safety measures in hopes for a faster recovery.
Impact on Global Economy
Major international flights and also all types of business transports have been deferred/postponed amid different countries.
Due to lockdown all domestic flights, railway service (except goods trains), bus, truck, and vehicles transports are suspended with special exemption to those associated with essential commodities.
In almost all the COVID-19 stricken countries, entire educational, commercial, sports and spiritual institutions are closed.
Economy of many so called powerful countries are now facing the threat of high inflation and increasing unemployment as a result of lack of productivity and excessive expenditure for the treatment and rehabilitation of the COVID-19 victims and their families.
Our homeland Nepal,a country aspiring to upgrade its least developed country status, has taken a huge toll in its economy due to the pandemic. Nepal’s core (source of income),which are remittances, agriculture and tourism, have been hit tremendously.
In January, the country was in hope to attract two million visitors, but due the corona pandemic the campaign got cancelled which has shattered the hospitality and tourism related business sector. (Example) This resulted in high number of job losses.
