Have you ever been a tutee in the Lit Center before? If yes, please share your experience. If no, why not? *
I've been a tutee twice, although both times were due to the visits being a requirement by my teachers. When I was a freshman, I went to the lit center to get advice from a student on fixing my English essay, and while I felt like my organization was a little better, I felt it ultimately didn't help too much. My sophomore year, I went there to check my corrections for a math test I didn't do so well on in order to take a retake. After school, there weren't any math teachers that day for some reason, but I was able to talk with my math teacher the next morning. Overall, my experience has been okay but not super great, but this is mostly due to me not going for help on my own.
Why do you want to be a tutor in the Center? What assets do you feel you can contribute to the Literacy Center? *
I want to be a tutor in the Lit Center because I want to be able to use my understanding of various school topics to help others. Recently, I've found that I have been enjoying helping people reach the same understanding as me, especially with math. Since I've been giving pretty good explanations to my friends and classmates this past school year, I feel like I can help others in the Lit Center. I feel like I can contribute by helping people with their schoolwork, and trying to understand what their perspective is like.
If your friend(s) come in for help and ask for you, should you work with them? Why or why not? *
I believe I should help my friends out if they need it. It's pretty normal for my friends to ask me for help in classwork (and not simply just answers all the time). Goofing off may seem like a risk, but that doesn't usually happen to me, and if it does happen, it would be when I have to do my own work. So, I think helping a friend wouldn't be harmful.
If I asked your best friend why we should invite you to work in the Lit Center, what would he or she say? *
He would probably say that I'm a very capable student who really seems to know how to succeed in my classes. He would probably point to examples of me offering help by giving an answer with an explanation, more likely in the areas of math or science.
What is one area, either personally or academically, you think you’ll need to work on in order to become the best tutor you can be? What will you do to make that happen? *
I think my patience could be worked upon. While I think my patience with other students is pretty good, I may not enjoy it if it takes a while for someone to figure out something. Obviously I'm not gonna lose my cool when it comes to something so silly. I'm talking more in the aspect of me losing interest or focus due to boredom. I just need to work on staying focused, which I can do by concentrating on the task at hand and checking in with the tutee.
If selected, will you be interested in working with the NWN as a copy editor? This means you will help the NWN proofread their writing. This does not effect you becoming a tutor. *
Yes
No
Please describe how you would help/handle a student in the following situation: A student walks in with an assignment a period before it's due. *
I would sit down with the student and calmly look at the assignment. I would ask them and see whether it can be feasibly done in a period. Then, we'll work together through the assignment, going through the steps and checking off the requirements for it. If the student doesn't understand a specific part of it, I'll try to explain it to the best of my ability. I would try to give brief but thorough explanations so that the student can get something out of their (probably) rushed assignment for that period.
What is your GPA? *
4.46
