Notes

1. Select your route along the Forest path. On a computer, you will click on the direction you would like to go. On a mobile device, you will tap “Choose Direction” to show the compass first, and then tap the direction of your choosing.
2. To pick up tools or perform another action, press the designated key on your computer keyboard or click the key icon. You have to travel light and make as little noise as possible, so you can only carry one tool at a time — be careful of what you pick up and put down.
3. Pay close attention. Beware of traps and dead ends along the way. If you make the wrong move, you will lose.
4. To win, you must have the right tool and be in the right place. There are multiple ways out of the Forest, and it’s up to you to figure out what they are.

> Tulip Garden
You are in the Tulip Garden. The night is cold enough for you to see your own breath as it fogs the air, and the Forest is lit bright blue to illuminate your way. After you mutter a navigation spell, the glow from your fingertip produces a glowing compass in midair. To the east, you hear what sounds like whispering. To the southeast, you see a path leading to what looks like a clearing. From the south, a fragrant breeze drifts up to meet you. Choose a direction to move forward.

> Indigo Underbrush
You are in the Indigo Underbrush. All around you, the plants are the shade of evening before the dark of midnight. Just off the path, you see something glinting in the dirt.
a. Would you like to pick it up?
> You are holding the Book bag and spell book
When you reach for the bit of metal, you find it attached to the strap of a bookbag containing a spellbook. 'BE WARY of what comes in threes,' reads a note tucked in the book. You sling the bag over your shoulder. Choose a direction to move forward.

> Cyan Caves
You are at the Cyan Caves. Belching noises of various pitches ring out at random from somewhere inside the Caves. Only one cavern, however, issues a thin stream of seafoam-colored smoke. From the cavern next to it, you hear more whispering.
a. Would you like to approach the whispering?
> You are holding the Book bag and spell book

> Pine Glen
You are in the Pine Glen. Trees rise sharply to either side of the dirt path that winds through the valley. As you round a curve, you think you see a flash of blonde hair disappearing among the trees. It could be another student preparing an attack, or it could have been your imagination.
a. Would you like to take an attack position among the trees, just in case?
> You scramble up the incline and tuck your body behind a tree trunk. Before you can make another move, however, a Stymph swoops down and snatches you up, upset that you're near its nest! You lose.

South West: Echo Field
South: Azure Mountains

> Invisible Bridge
You are on the Invisible Bridge. The transparent structure beneath you creaks and you fight a wave of vertigo as its appearance ripples before your eyes. A dark figure materializes at the end of the Bridge, then CHARGES —
a. Protect yourself!
> The figure advances on you, but you don't have the right tool to defend yourself! It knocks you off the Bridge and you drown. You lose.

> Pumpkin Patch
You are in the Pumpkin Patch. For a moment, you stop, studying all the ways in which the path diverges. On closer inspection, you see smashed pumpkins by the route leading southwest, as though someone trampled them in their haste to head that way. The pumpkins facing south and east have rotted (a possible omen). Choose a direction to move forward.

> Sleeping Willows
You are in the Sleeping Willows. The air here is close and warm, although occasionally a burst of arctic air gusts down from the north. Dry willow fronds lie scattered across the path — excellent starter material for a fire

> Black Tidal Pool
You are at the Black Tidal Pool. From where you stand at the edge of Blue Brook, you can see where the slow trickle of the water swells into a murky, churning whirlpool. Anything tossed into the center of the Pool is sucked into the depths — but not immediately. First, it floats, bobbing back and forth as though the water is thinking. Testing the object.
Would you like to try tossing something into the water?

> Echo Field
You are in the Echo Field. You remember vaguely from class that magical gnats create echoes here. Ahead of you, a dark-haired girl shouts a compass direction — west — and the gnats give an echoed response: “Stinky — stinky — stinky…” The girl does not go in this direction, heading the opposite way instead. She does not notice you, so you know it is an accident when something drops from her bag as she goes.

> Azure Mountains
You are at the Azure Mountains. In the distance, you see three specks making their way to the summit of the tallest one. Oddly, as you move closer to the base of that mountain, you find a pile of cloaks, one of which looks about your size.
Would you like to pick up the cloak?

South West: Turquoise Thicket

> Turquoise Thicket
You are in the Turquoise Thicket. The forest path keeps wending past where you stand, but your finger glow pulses in response to the energy here. A cluster of three large trees sits in the center of the Thicket and, almost as if they sense your attention, they begin to shift.

West: Carnivorous Shrubs

> Carnivorous Shrubs
You are in the Carnivorous Shrubs. While the shrubs possess thousands of tiny, snapping mouths, you avoid them easily by staying on the path. To the west you hear screams, to the east you see a burst of light through the foliage, and to the northwest you think you can make out the sound of running water. The path heading northeast goes beyond what you can see or hear. Choose a direction.

West: Fern Field

> Fern Field
You are in the Fern Field. On all sides, the giant leaves of the plants make the Forest feel wilder — almost jungle-like. Suddenly, somewhere to your left you hear someone call your name.
a. Would you like to investigate?
> A trap! The foliage closes in over you and traps you to the spot for good. You lose.
North: Black Tidal Pool
West: Blueberry Fields

> Blueberry Fields
You are in the Blueberry Fields. Fat bushes that stretch just above your height stand in straight rows — until you begin walking, and they close ranks to block the path before you.
a. Would you like to cast a wind spell?
> Your spell rattles the bushes and flings hundreds of blueberries into the air, where they seem to move of their own accord. They drift northeast and form a swirling shape, then drift east and morph into three tree-like shapes. Once they fall, the path clears. Choose a direction to move forward.
b. Or would you like to eat berries from the nearest bush?
> As soon as the tart berries burst between your teeth, the bush moves aside to reveal a sword, which you pick up. Choose a direction to move forward.
