In order to determine the specific heat of a sample of a solid substance that doesn't react with water, you would use a calorimeter. A calorimeter is essentially an insulated cup with a lid, thermometer, and water solution. The water would absorb the reaction, change temperature, and the data will be visible on the thermometer. In order to interpret the data that you collected, you need to calculate the mass, calculate the solution's change in temperature, and use the released/absorbed heat formula to discover how much heat was given off/needed.
