- Material is transported along the coastline by longshore drift
- When there is a break in the coastline, across a river or change in coastline direction, the material is deposited
- This is due to counter currents and a loss in velocity.
- The material builds up to form a ridge extending out to sea
- The spit often curves due to change in prevailing wind direction
- In the sheltered water behind the spit, deposits of mud build up to form a salt marsh also
WAVE-CUT PLATFORMS
- When waves break against a CLIFF, erosion close to the high tide line takes a 'bite' out of the base of the cliff making it a WAVE-CUT NOTCH
- As the notch gets deeper, often over a period of many years, the overhanging rock can no longer support its own weight and so collapses, causing the
cliff to RETREAT
- In its place, the retreating cliffs leave a gently sloping rocky platform called a WAVE-CUT PLATFORM
- Wave-cut platforms are typically smoothed by abrasion
- Over time, constructive waves may deposit sediment on such a platform to form a beach
HEADLANDS AND BAYS
- These features form a s a result of DIFFERENTIAL erosion e.g. different sections of rock erode at different speeds
- More resistant rock is harder and so erodes more slowly and forms a HEADLAND
- The less resistant rock erodes more quickly and so forms a BAY
- These features are often found where bands of rock lie PERPENDICULAR to the shore
- Headlands are vulnerable to POWERFUL waves and so exhibit many landforms of erosion
- Whereas bays are sheltered, so DEPOSITION dominates
