Započela je 2.8.1955., kada je SSSR 4 dana ranije nego određeno lansirao artificialne satelite za internacionalnu geografsku godinu. Internacionalna geografska godina je znastveni projekt koji je radio od 1957. godine do 1958. godine. Projek je obuhvačao 11 različitih područja geoznanosti, a to su bila: zračni sjaj, kozmičke zrake, geomagnetizam, gravitacija, ionosferska fizika, određivanje zemljopisne dužine i zemljopisne širine (precizno mapiranje), meteorologija, oceanografija, seizmologija i sunčeva aktivnost. Projekt je pri kraju imao čak 70 država koje su sudjelovale i pripomagale pri njemu.
Osim uranjenog slanja artificalnih satelita SSSR je najavio da će u skoroj budučnosti lansirati satelite u svemir. Prvi uspješno lansirani satelit bioj je lansiran 4.10.1957.
Osim ovoga SSSR je najavio da će lansirati još satelita u skoroj budućnosti.
