Sejarah : fortune cookie pertama kali dibuat di Jepang saat abad ke-19 dan sudah menjadi bagian tradisi dari kuil Jepang yang disebut O Mikuji. Dulu, fortune cookie bentuknya lebih besar dan memiliki warna lebih gelap hingga cokelat. Adonannya dibuat dengan wijen atau miso.
Nama lain dari fortune cookie adalah tsujiura senbei dan masih dijual di beberapa daerah Jepang. Kalau liburan ke Jepang dan mampir ke Fushimi Inari-taisa di Kyoto, kamu bisa menemukan fortune cookie di sana.
Peneliti yang mempelajari asal-usul kue ini adalah Yasuko Nakamachi.
Penelitian ini menemukan bukti lewat gambar tahun 1878 yang ada di sebuah buku. Adonan dibentuk dalam sebuah cetakan khusus, dan sebelum kuenya matang, pembuat kue akan menyelipkan omikuji ke dalamnya.
Omikuji inilah yang disebut sebagai kertas keberuntungan, yang berisi ungkapan maupun angka.
Fortune cookie sempat disebut dengan nama tea cake sebelum berubah menjadi fortune cookie. Hingga pada Perang Dunia ke II, kue kecil ini baru diganti namanya.
