Hello and welcome to my podcast! In today's episode, I will be talking about a rising social media app, TikTok. Tiktok is a video sharing platform owned by Bytedance, a Beijing based company. This app was launched in 2014, originally known as Musical.ly. On the app, "creators" can create videos while "watchers" can follow, comment, and like on the creator's posts. The question remains on why TikTok is so addictive. To begin, TikTok uses a lot of advertising around social media, so you may see an ad on Instagram or Twitter, for example. The effect of these commercials will take you to download the app. TikTok can also influence your music taste. In a study conducted with five peers, all five responded yes to TikTok's effect on their musical taste. Eventually, TikTok determines the stuff that you like. For instance, the content of the creator that you enjoyed can be shown more on the For You Page. The topic of addiction also leads to which age group the app is most popular. Downloads of TikTok have increased rapidly, as 1.5 million users are on it. According to a study done by mediakix, 60% of users are between 16-24 years old (that's at least 2/3rds!) and users spend at least 52 minutes per DAY on TikTok.
