The Boxer is a German breed that was originally developed to be hunting companions. They were bred for their loyalty, bravery, and speed. Today, most Boxers are a family dog. This breed took a over one-hundred years to cultivate. Boxers became AKC certified in 1904.

The Boxer is derived from an ancient breed called the Bullenbeisser. The Bullenbeisser was a type of Mastiff, once used as German hunting dogs. Purebred Bullenbeissers
unfortunately no longer exist. The Boxer is a cross between the Bullenbeisser and the
English Bulldog.

The Boxer has transitioned from a hunting dog, to a guard dog, to a companion dog in about the span of one hundred years. Boxers gained popularity in the United States after soldiers brought them back as guard dogs. Today, they are are considered family dogs.

The Boxer is characterized by its short coat. Boxers come in three different colors: brindle, fawn, and white. However, the white variation, while recognized, is not considered standard. This has caused controversy among Boxer enthusiasts, who believe the white variation should be made standard.

Boxers often get along with other dogs. They are typically very friendly and sociable. Some Boxers can get along with cats as well. However, some Boxers have a high prey drive. This means they are prone to hunting other animals. Boxers who get along with cats have lower prey drives. Do not allow small animals, such as gerbils, to be alone with your dog.

Boxers are energetic dogs that need to be able to exercise daily. It is also recommended that you let your dog out to play multiple times a week. This can be done in a fenced backyard, or a dog-friendly park. It is not recommended to house a Boxer in an apartment due to their size and energy levels.

A good diet is necessary for the health of a Boxer. A dog food brand free of grains and preservatives in considered optimal for your dog’s well-being. Adult Boxers above the age of two should be fed twice a day. To avoid bloat, they should be fed slowly and avoid exercise beforehand.

A Boxer needs to drink anywhere from 9-13 cups of water a day. This depends on weather, activity level, and weight. A Boxer needs to drink about 1.62 cups per ten pounds of body weight. Be sure not to let your dog drink too quickly. Fast consumption of water can cause bloat in Boxers. It is also important not to let your dog drink water from the tap. Tap water can contain contaminants that cause cancer. For example, fluoride has been shown to be toxic to dogs. However, this element is added to most tap water in the United States.

During the summer, it is important to prevent your Boxer from overheating. This can be avoided by letting them out when it is cooler outside. For example, walking them in the early morning or the evening. It is important that you give your Boxer enough water to avoid dehydration. If your Boxer is lethargic and panting, they need to cool down. Small amounts of water throughout the day will help keep your Boxer hydrated.

In the winter, it is important to protect your Boxer from the elements. Due to their short coats, it’s advised for them to wear clothing in the cold. A Boxer shouldn’t be left unattended in the snow. A wet, cold Boxer is a recipe for disaster.

Their paws will need protection as well. Paw wax will help prevent damage during the winter. Boxers will oftentimes spend less time outside during colder months.

Boxers have some health concerns to look out for, like any other breed. Boxers are prone to cancer. Unfortunately, cancer is the top killer of Boxers. White Boxers can even develop skin cancer from being in the sun. Boxers are also susceptible to bloat. Air, water, and food can get trapped in a dog’s stomach and cause harm to the dog. This can be prevented with proper feeding habits.

The average lifespan of a Boxer is anywhere from 9-12 years. Boxers past the age of 8 are considered senior dogs. Past the age of ten, their health often rapidly declines. Boxers have a short lifespan compared to smaller dog breeds. This lifespan can be increased through proper care. Spaying and neutering your dogs can help increase its lifespan, considering it can help prevent some types of cancer.
