Pada saat kejayaannya, sandi ini dijuluki le chiffre indéchiffrable yang berarti ‘sandi yang tak terpecahkan’.. Metode pemecahan sandi ini baru ditemukan pada abad ke-19. Pada tahun 1854, Charles Babbage menemukan cara untuk memecahkan sandi Vigenère.
Metode ini dinamakan tes Kasiski karena Friedrich Kasiski-lah yang pertama mempublikasikannya. Tabel Vigenère berisi alfabet yang dituliskan dalam 26 baris, masing-masing baris digeser satu urutan ke kiri dari baris sebelumnya, membentuk 26 kemungkinan sandi Caesar. Setiap huruf disandikan dengan menggunakan baris yang berbeda-beda, sesuai kata kunci yang diulang. Orang awam yang belum tahu sandi ini pasti mengira ini cuma huruf-huruf acak, padahal sebenarnya ada makna tersendiri.
Contoh :
Kata Ella yang digabung dengan kata TENT.
Kata asli: ELLA
Kata kunci: TENT
Dengan rumus vigenere, bisa diubah menjadi
5 + 20 - 1 = 24 (huruf X)
12 + 5 - 1 = 16 (huruf P)
12 + 14 - 1 = 25 (huruf Y)
1 + 20 - 1 = 20 (huruf T)
Kesimpulannya, vigenere dari ELLA dengan kata kunci TEN ialah XPYT.
Cara membalikkan Kode.
XPYT dibalikkan ke huruf Ella dg rumus vigenere dan kata kunci TEN, menjadi:
24 - 20 + 1 = 5 (huruf E)
16 - 5 + 1 = 12 (huruf L)
25 - 14 + 1 = 12 (huruf L)
20 - 20 + 1 = A (huruf A)
(Tandanya saja yang dibalik.)
*TAmbahan : Jika penambahannya melewat 26 sebagai akhir dari banyaknya huruf, kamu tinggal menghitung sisanya. Seperti:
Abjad E dengan kata kunci X
5 + 24 - 1 = 28 ( berarti hurufnya B karena 28 - 26 itu 2 alias B)
