Elemen atau (elementun) berasal dari kata latin yang berarti "bagian-bagian yang mendasari sesuatu". Elemen berkembang dalam bahasa yunani (stoicheion).
Dari kata tersebut kita mengetahui Elemen klasik atau Unsur klasik.
Unsur klasik merupakan suatu konsep yang digunakan para filosofi kuno untuk menjelaskan terjadinya suatu pola dialam semesta.
Dalam versi yunani konsep ini sudah sejak lama dari zaman pra-socrats terus berthan melewati abad pertengahan sampai masuk masa Renaisans. Dalam waktu itu cara berpikir masyarakat eropa dan budaya mulai dipengaruhi.
Konsep unsur klasik lebih dikenal didaerah timur dan tersebar luas luas diindia dan rakyat tiongkok. Sampai sekarang masih menjadi dasar Buddhisme dan Hinduisme.
