Cyren was born and abandoned in the woods. She was raised by the tree folk in the White Woods. When the surrounding towns begin to poison the trees, Cyren must escape. Cyren turns up in the Black Village, a place her guardian (Ealea) had warned her against. Cyren finds herself in the hands of a Black Villager, the Councillor's wife, who tells her about the Black Village. Cyren immediately runs away and curses the Black Village. While the Black Villagers are escaping, a girl named Sylris begs Cyren to turn back and change it. Cyren is forced to go find the Wizard Sideon and he teaches her how to do magic. However, Cyren will not obey her magic and ruins more places, making her become the Black Witch. Cyren finds herself enjoying her title and continues her destruction for many years. Meanwhile, Sylris is desperate to save her ill mother and father and runs into Sideon trying to find help. He reluctantly teaches her magic after much demanding and Sylris becomes the White Witch, slowly saving everyone. When they come together in combat, the Black and White Witches see who the other is behind the disguise and try to save the other before their doom. Neither succeeds in their goal because they are taken away by Sideon. Locked up together, they learn the other's true identity. When Cyren breaks out, Sylris is questioned by Sideon and she says she knew nothing. Sylris is set free after Sideon learns the truth and goes to try and rescue Cyren, but is unsuccessful, and is shunned by the Villages for helping the Black Witch.
