slide 4: question 3, What was the extent of the ice during the last glacial period?
At some points the ice was up to 3 kilometers deep. During the maximum point of the last ice age, glaciers covered about 32 % of the entire world’s land area. Ice once covered all of Antarctica, most parts of Europe, all of South America, some of North America, and small areas in Asia. a man from sweden named Baron Gerard de Geer created a system to estimate the length of the Ice Age during the ice age, this was done by examining the soil deposits on the bottoms of ancient glacier-fed lakes. This was useful when scientists were collecting evidence of the ice age and where wanting to find out about the lengths and depths it covered. The image that is on the slide is a good reference of where the ice covered.

slide 5: question 4, What plants and animal species lived in Europe during the last glacial period?
There was a large variety of wildlife thriving during the ice age and Pleistocene period. Not many trees would grow as they struggled to survive through the extreme weather, but other grasses and some flowering plants covered the land during the warmer seasons. Many large mammals would live through all seasons including reindeer, musk-oxen, woolly rhinos, giant sloths, mooses and woolly mammoths. Also, by the end of the ice age humans were living south of the glaciers as well.
