Other organs and systems in the body help regulate blood cells. The lymph nodes, spleen, and liver help regulate the production, destruction, and function of cells. The process of production and construction of new cells is called hematopoiesis.
All blood cells start off as stem cells or hematopoietic stem cells. As it matures, distinct cells evolve. Including the red blood cell, white blood cells, and platelets. Platelets are small colorless disk-shaped cell fragments without a nucleus. These are found in large numbers in blood and are involved in blood clotting. The immature blood cells are called blasts. Some blasts stay in the bone marrow to mature. Other blasts move to other parts of the body to develop into working blood cells.
The functions of red blood cells are to carry oxygen from the lungs and to body tissues taking back carbon dioxide which is a waste product away from the tissues and to the lungs. Hemoglobin is an important protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to all other parts of the body.
White blood cells have the job of fighting infections. White blood cells are also called leukocytes. There are different type of white blood cells. These include neutrophils, eosinophils, lymphocytes, monocytes,
