Eleanor Roosevelt
Eleanor Roosevelt was born on the 11th of October, 1884 in New York City. Despite having a wealthy family, Eleanor had a tough childhood, her mother died when she was only 8 and her father when she was 10.
When Eleanor's parents were still alive, her mother liked to tease her by calling her 'Granny' as she was always mature and serious.

When the young girl turned 15, her Grandmother decided to send her to boarding school near London. At first Eleanor was terrified of going there however the headteacher took an intrest in her. By the time graduation came around she gained confidence in herself and learnt a bunch of things, especially about herself. She felt proud of herself as she returned home as a new person.

When Eleanor returned to the United States, she began dating her distant cousin Franklin Roosevelt, he attended Harvard University at the time. Eleanor and Franklin spent a great deal of time together and they fell deeply in love. Eleanor married Franklin on March the 17th, 1905.

After they got married, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt began to have children. They had 6 children in total including Anna, James, Franklin, Elliott, Franklin Jr. and John. Sadly, Their son Franklin died young and wasn't able to grow up and become an adult. Whilst her husband was at work, Eleanor took care of the children and the household.

Eleanor's husband Franklin had become a famous politition and hoped to one day become the president. Unfortunatly, one Summer he got increadibly sick and nearly died due to the disease called Polio. Franklin luckily survived but would never walk again due to it.

Franklin decided to be resilient and stay in politics however his wife was determined to help the one she loved in any way she could so she decided to become involved in many orginizations. She wanted to help poor, black people, children and woman to have a better life. She was selfless, determined and independant, doing the best she can and did not think of herself.

Franklin D. Roosevelt was inaugurated as President of the United States on March 4, 1933 thus making Eleanor the First Lady. The First Lady always had the job of being the host at parting and entertaining foreign dignitaries and political leaders but Eleanor thought she could do more than just that.

At the start of Frankin's presdiency, America was suffering from the Great Depression. Many people were struggling to get jobs and even eat so Franklin created the New Deal to try to keep this at a minimal. Eleanor helped her husband with this by travaling around America to see where his programs have or have not been working. She would travel thousands upon thousands of miles just to help people.
On December 7th, 1941, Pearl Harbor was attacked by Japanese airplanes and the had destroyed many ships and killed many soldiers. Franklin was forced to declare war and join WW2. Unlike many woman during this time, Eleanor did not stay behind at saftey but went to work for the Red Cross. She traveled all the way to Europe and the South Pacific to visit the sick and the wounded and to let the troops who are far away from home know that they were appreciated.

On April the 12th, 1945, Franklin died of a stroke. Eleanor was heartbroken, she wanted to continue their work and for 7 years she represented the United States at the United Nations and helped write the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
Eleanor sadly died on the 7th of November, 1962 due to Tuberculosis and was buried next to her beloved husband. After her death, Time Magazine called her the 'world's most admired and talked about woman'.

Eleanor was not the type of person to stand around and wait for something to happen, she was couragous, brave woman and did all she could for others to have a better life. She was selfless and despite of all the bad things that happened to her, she still pushed through and made a big difference.
Eleanor Roosevelt, an active first lady who worked for human rights.
