Summertime work-time for Ms. Noonen's 2014 English class!

You will be reading two books over the summer. While reading, you will be keeping a reflection log. This log will contain three items for each chapter:
1. Create your own title for a chapter (if one already exists, make your own). Try and encapsulate what happened in as few words as possible.
2. Copy down ?the most important quote? you find from the chapter. Please remember to use MLA citation. The quote should be 2-5 sentences.
3. Write out a 2-3 sentence reflection on the chapter. What did you learn? What did you like? What confused you?

I would like for this to be typed, and I would like for you to spend some time each week on this project. The books you are reading over the summer were chosen for very specific reasons, and we will be dedicating the first three months of the new school year to review these texts, so your reading over the summer should be both thorough and reflective. This work will be worth up to 200 points, and will be due in printed form at the beginning of our first period of study together.

* Chapter 21: London, Beyond the Horizon

ASSIGNMENT #1 (continued): As you read your assigned chapter, you are responsible
for a thorough outline. You have been given a guideline (an example of a chapter on Turkey
from historian Barbara Tuchman) for the structure of this outline, but keep in mind that this
structure is only a basis and not a completely thorough example of the outline for which you
are responsible. Please feel free to add visuals (maps, photos of important individuals,
visuals of anything relevant to your chapter, etc.) to make your chapter’s outline as
comprehensive and as interesting as possible. The 8 components of your Chapter Outline
are: A) General Summary of Chapter, B) Major People, C) Major Terms, D) Major Events, E)
Key Quotes, F) Historiography – How Emmerson Writes History and G) Asking 3 Review
Questions Based on Chapter. You will be allowed to use your collective outlines (which will
compose a comprehensive study guide to 1913) during the quiz the first week of school.
Therefore, in theory, if you each have taken DILIGENT notes in your Chapter Outlines, you
should be well-prepared for the quiz.

physical and political features of Europe and the world in order to better understand the

relative size! An assessment will be given the first week of our class based on the items
