Federalism= system of government in which the power is divided between the national government and other governmental units
Ratification=the action of signing or giving formal consent to a treaty, contract, or agreement, making it officially valid.
Constitution= the basic principles and laws of a nation, state, or social group that determine the powers and duties of the government and guarantee certain rights to the people in it

Amendment=a minor change or addition designed to improve a text, piece of legislation
Magna Carta= a document constituting a fundamental guarantee of rights and privileges
Mayflower compact=a set of rules for self-governance established by the English settlers who traveled to the New World on the Mayflower.
Articles of Confideration=the original constitution of the US, ratified in 1781, which was replaced by the US Constitution in 1789.
Land Ordinance of 1785=Divided land that could be sold. 1 plot for school. 36 lots 640 acres
Northwest Ordinance of 1787=Banned slavery, layed out land to become states.
Shays rebellion=Unfair taxes, armed uprise
Constitutional Convention=a gathering for the purpose of writing a new constitution or revising an existing constitution
New Jersey Plan= one option as to how the United States would be governed; equal representation for every state no matter what the population.
Virginia Plan=called for states with larger populations to have more representation in the government
Great Compromise=Both plans, 2 branches, bicameral
Federalist Papers= Madison, John Jay, Hamilton
English Bill of Rights=creates separation of powers, limits the powers of the king and queen, enhances the democratic election and bolsters freedom of speech.
Constitutional Convention= Revised A.O.C
