Meg and Jo have been invited to a new years party by their neighbor, Mrs.Gardiner. Jo does not enjoy it at first, but when she meets Mr.Lauence's som, Theodore (Laurie), she befriends him, while Meg meets new friends that end up inviting her to future parties.
Amy follows Jo and Laurie down to a frozen pond for ice skating, but doesn't listen to Laurie's warnings of thin ice, and falls through. Jo knew that Amy did not hear, but was still angry from Amy upsetting her the day before; once she falls in and Laurie saves her, Jo apologizes for neglecting her duties as her older sibling and Amy apologizies for burning one of her stories.
Meg attends a second party, and her rich friend tries to help Meg fit in by dressing her frivolously, yet Meg felt that everyone had gossiped about her the whole party. She learns that money means nothing if you doing have genuine friends.
The girls discover that their 'experiment' of doing no work during the day was planned by their mother in order to make them understand that since their father is fighting in the Civil War, they have to work in order to have free time and just relaxing all day is not satisfying.
