Kantong semar merupakan genus Nepenthes atau tanaman tahunan yang hidupnya menjalar, merambat atau berbentuk perdu. Kantong semar masuk ke dalam dikotiledon atau sekumpulan tumbuhan berbunga yang bijinya mengandung daun daun embrio. Kantong semar merupakan tumbuhan karnivora, kantong semar mengeluarkan madu untuk menarik mangsanya. Aroma dari madu itu akan menarik si serangga yang menyukai nektar. Saat serangga hingap dan membuka tutup kantung semar, si serangga akan jatuh ke dalamnya dan mati.
Ada beberapa ciri khusus kantong semar, contohnya cara mendapatkan nutrisi dengan membuat kantong sebagai perangkap serangga. Untuk mencerna serangga yang di mangsa, kantong semar ini mempunyai cairan asam yang bisa di sebut enzim dan mengubahnya manjadi nitrat. Daun muda pada kantong semar, dia akan tertutup sampai dia dewasa. Ketika si kantong sudah tumbuh dewasa, dia akan terbuka dan berfungsi sebagai perangkap serangga. Kalau si kantong berkuruan kecil dan belum terbuka, maka dia adalah si kantong muda. Jika si kantong dewasa sedang menutup kantongnya, berarti dia sedang mencerna si serangga alias makanannya.
