the Winnipeg general strike was the largest strike that happened in Canadian history In May-June 1919 more than 30,00 workers left their jobs and joined the strike. Although the strike was not immediately successful, it did, however, made the working class united. The reason why this event started is because of employees struggling to meet the basic standard of living due to low wages and high prices of housing and basic necessities. The movement called syndicalism made by the international workers wanted to bring down capitalism, this inspired labour leaders in Canada to meet in Calgary and make a group called one big union. In Winnipeg, workers of metal, trades and factories were negotiating their managers to have job improvements, they wanted to have the right of collective bargaining. The WTLC called a strike, the CSC co-coordinated the strike; within hours 30,000 men and women left their jobs to join the strike. The citizen's committee which is the working class' opposition tried to appease them by blaming the communists. The government decided to step in to prevent any further conflicts in other cities, 2 cabinet ministers met up with the citizens' committee but not with the WTLC, siding with the citizen's committee they modified the Immigration Act to deport some British working class and arrested 12 leaders from both WTLC and OBU. The working class held a silent parade for the arrested leaders
