Booksmart is a refreshing take on the typical coming-of-age movie that juxtaposes teens who are supposed to represent specific groups of characters such as the ditzy blonde, jerky jock, and “triple A” bimbo. What separates this film from others is that it reveals the multidimensionality of the characters (particularly the teens), transcending the typical notions of stereotypical figures that many baby boomers would like to believe high school contains. Its themes of acceptance and equal opportunities for teens reassure the viewer that even though someone can appear to be a conceited jock, they can also identify with and be interested in certain Harry Potter houses. I found that I strongly identified with this film, as it focuses on two girls’ fear of missing out on peer activities, and I have mostly been focused on academic activities throughout high school, and have recently had epiphanies pertaining to a wish that I could have done more “fun” things throughout my high school career. #FOMO
