The worlds only alpine parrot, the Kea is an endemic to New Zealand's south island. They once numbered in the hundreds of thousands but are now classified as nationally endangered with between 3,000 and 7,000 birds remaining. They are famed for their intelligence and curiosity which is probably what brought this guy to me. I'd wandered well in of the main road looking for a view at Monkey Creek when I turned around and found this guy walking along the track after me 😂 Without a care in the world he was beelining straight for my open backpack, but managed to save it before he got there. Whereas most other birds would have flown off at this stage, he was happy enough to chill around for another few minutes watching me and no doubt hoping for a chance to get into the backpack but after figuring out he wasn't getting in he decided to move onto the next pasture.
Delighted to have had the chance to see one of these beautiful birds up close and personal, and hopefully will get the chance again soon.
