In thids section, you will learn about four main types of abuse: neglect, emotional, physical and sexual. Each of these types is equally important; however, in this training we will focus more heavily on sexual abuse. Sexual abuse is more difficult to “catch” whereas other types of abuse are more likely to be visible.
Per Child Protective Services in Harris County’s Annual Report, during 2011 CPS in Harris County received a total of 27,565 reports of child abuse and neglect. Of those reports, 5,493 children were confirmed to have been abused or neglected in Harris County. In 2011, there were 38 child abuse or neglect related fatalities in Harris County and 231 in the State of Texas.

·Lack of food, clothing or shelter to sustain the life or health of the child
·Lack of necessary medical care
·Failure to educate a child or attend to special needs
·Placing a child in or failing to remove a child from a situation where a child may be at substantial risks of sexual abuse

In 2013, 64,603 children were victims of abuse or neglect in Texas.
Of these children, 83.5% were neglected, 18.1% were physically abused, and 9.3% were sexually abused.
