Kata elemen berasal dari kata Latin, elementum yang berarti 'bagian-bagian dasar yang mendasari sesuatu'. Perkembangan kata ini dalam bahasa Latin sangat dipengaruhi oleh kata dalam bahasa Yunani στοιχεῖον (stoicheion).
Elemen klasik atau unsur klasik adalah suatu konsep yang digunakan oleh para filosof kuno untuk menjelaskan terjadinya pola-pola di alam.
Versi Yunani dari konsep ini telah ada sejak zaman pra-Socrates dan bertahan melewati abad pertengahan dan masuk sampai masa Renaisans, secara mendalam memberikan pengaruh cara berpikir dan budaya orang-orang Eropa. Akan tetapi konsep ini jauh lebih tua telah dikenal di Timur jauh dan secara luas tersebar di India dan Republik Rakyat Tiongkok, di mana konsep tersebut membentuk dasar dari Buddhisme dan Hinduisme, secara khusus dalam suatu konteks esoteris.
