Daniel was already in the cult, and he was slowly becoming the leader since the leaders before him had either been quitting or dying (sometimes both). He was also a trusted, OG member of the cult. He fell in love with a boy named John. (a?) His cult had no problem with sexuality since that didn't matter in Zeemug's eyes. It came time for him to be the cult leader. Things are more strict when you're the cult leader, though. Your partners and friends NEED to be in your cult. He tells John that's he now a leader of (now) his cult, and he needs to join so they can stay together. John eventually (?b) says no, after saying yes once. Daniel tells the cult about the experience, saying he was tested of his faith. The whole cult is to see John as someone who they need to get rid off. (c?) They saw John as a demon to exist only to test us. Something something happened

(a?) Daniel is obsessive in the relationship
John had met Daniel while Daniel had been taking samples of trees and plants. John, assuming that Daniel was some sort of scientist, had approached Daniel. They made pleasant talk and slowly became friends. Then they become more than friends. It happened only in the span of one month, but they both trusted each other immensely. Daniel acted more protective and controlling over John, but John let it slide as Daniel being a nice boyfriend. Daniel had told the cult many things about his adventures with John, never going too far as to take each other's virginity. The cult had approved and many liked their relationship.

(?b) John is hesitant to say no
John had had a great relationship with Daniel and is having trouble seeing him as this bad person. Daniel tells him more about the cult so then John could join it. The more John heard about it, the more disturbed he had gotten. He was to either choose love or sanity. John told Daniel he couldn't join such a... community. He could still be friends though... (No he can't because Daniel can't without going against Zeemug)
